There are two types of Slovenes who contact me every week.
The first type writes like this: “Žan, I got in when you said to. The profit came.”
The second type writes like this: “Žan, I was waiting for the right moment. Now it’s too expensive.”
The difference between them isn’t luck. It isn’t a college education. It isn’t capital. The difference is a single step — they started. A simple step that most people never take, because they don’t know where to begin.
This article is for those who belong to the second type — and are ready to change that.
Before you go any further: I’ve gathered every step I describe below into a free e-book. Download it here — it’s free, and thousands of Slovenes have already read it.
Cryptocurrencies in Slovenia: What’s Actually Happening
The number of Slovenes actively investing is growing. The exchanges I recommend accept Slovenian bank transfers without any trouble. Crypto isn’t some distant thing — it’s part of everyday life for more and more ordinary Slovenes who decided not to wait for the bank to offer them 0.1% interest.
But you need to understand one thing: the market doesn’t wait for anyone. When you wake up and realize you should have started — the next best time is now.
What Are Cryptocurrencies — Without the Boring Explanation
Forget the textbook definitions. Here’s a description anyone can understand:
Imagine there’s money that nobody prints. Not a bank, not a government. It exists only on the internet, in a system called a blockchain — a digital ledger of transactions shared by millions of computers at the same time. Nobody can forge it, delete it, or “print” more of it than planned.
Bitcoin was the first money of this kind. Exactly 21 million units will ever exist — and there will never be any more. This very scarcity is the reason its value grows over the long term.
Ethereum went a step further. Applications, contracts, games, and financial systems run on it — all without banks and intermediaries. Think of it as the “internet for money.”
Altcoins are all the other cryptocurrencies — thousands of projects, some of which solve real problems and have the potential for 10x, 50x, or 100x growth. Of course: greater potential means greater risk. That’s why you need to know what you’re buying.
Key term: Market Cap (Market Capitalization) The total value of all coins in circulation. You calculate it simply: price × number of coins. Why should you care? A coin with a market cap of 5 million EUR has room for 100x growth. A coin with a market cap of 500 billion EUR — doesn’t.

Why Most Beginners Lose Money (And How You Won’t)
The statistics are brutal: most new crypto investors end their first year with a loss. Not because the market is bad. But because they enter without a system.
Here are 3 mistakes I see again and again:
Mistake #1: They buy when the media is screaming. When Bitcoin is on the front pages of Finance and 24ur, it’s the peak of the cycle — not the beginning. Those who truly profit buy when it’s quiet. When nobody is writing about crypto. When there’s fear in the market.
Term: FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) — an emotional trap that forces you to buy at the top. The opposite of a good strategy.
Mistake #2: They put too much into one coin. Diversification isn’t cowardice. It’s math. When you spread your money across 5–8 projects, one mistake doesn’t destroy everything.
Mistake #3: They have no exit. Before you buy, decide: at what price will you take profit? At what price will you admit a mistake and minimize your loss (stop loss)? Without this, you decide with emotions — and emotions cost money in the market.

4 Ways to Make Money with Cryptocurrencies in Slovenia
1. HODL — Buy and Forget (For Those Who Don’t Want to Complicate Things)
HODL is slang for holding cryptocurrencies for the long term (originally a typo of the word “hold”). You buy Bitcoin or Ethereum, store it in a wallet — and don’t touch it for months or years.
Sounds too slow? Let’s look at reality: those who bought Bitcoin and simply held it are among the most successful investors of the last decade. No analysis. No staring at the chart every day. Just patience.
This strategy is ideal for beginners and for those who don’t have time to follow the market every day.
How to get started:
Open an account on an exchange (explained below).
Buy Bitcoin or Ethereum with an amount you can afford to lose.
Every month, buy more with the same amount — regardless of the price.
Term: DCA (Dollar Cost Averaging) — every month you buy the same amount, regardless of the price. When the price is high, you get fewer coins. When it’s low, you get more. Over time your average purchase price goes down and you’re protected from volatility.

2. Staking — Your Money Works While You Sleep
Staking is my personal favorite way of earning passive income. Here’s how it works: some cryptocurrencies (Ethereum, Solana, and others) need investors to “stake” their coins to keep the network running. In return, the network rewards you — as if a bank were paying you interest, only significantly higher.
Exchanges like Binance and Bybit handle staking automatically. You click a button — and your coins start working for you.
While you wait for the price of your cryptocurrency to rise, staking pays you for waiting. Double the earnings.
3. Copy Trading — Copy Those Who Already Know How
Copy trading is one of the smartest inventions for beginners. On the Bybit platform (and a few others) you can choose an experienced investor, and your account will automatically copy their every move. When they buy — you buy. When they sell — you sell.
Your returns match theirs. Of course, the opposite is true as well — so you have to choose wisely.
How to choose the right trader to copy:
- Look for a long track record — at least 6–12 months, not someone who hit a 500% gain once.
- Check the drawdown (the largest drop in portfolio value) — the lower, the better.
- Choose those with stable, moderate returns, not extreme highs and lows.
For a complete beginner who has no time for analysis, copy trading is one of the best entry points into the crypto world.

4. Airdrops — Free Coins That Most People Overlook
An airdrop is when a new project gives away coins to those who try out its platform, follow it on Twitter, or complete simple tasks. Why? Because new projects need attention and users.
Free sounds suspicious — but it’s standard practice in the crypto world.
My advice: follow the projects’ official channels on Twitter and Discord. Be among the first to try a new platform. You can often sell the coins you receive once the project gains value.
Step by Step: How to Get Started Today
Step 1: Choose an Exchange and Open an Account
An exchange is an online platform where you buy cryptocurrencies with euros. For Slovenia, I recommend:
| Binance | The largest in the world, low fees, available in Slovenian |
| Bybit | Best for copy trading, easy for beginners |
| KuCoin | Rich selection of altcoins, good staking options |
| CoinEx | Fastest sign-up, minimal requirements |
| Gate.io | Large selection of altcoins, advanced features and trading tools |
Registration takes 10 minutes. You need an email, a password, and an ID document for identification (KYC — Know Your Customer, a legal requirement that protects both you and the platform).
Step 2: Secure Your Account with 2FA
2FA (two-factor authentication) means that in addition to your password, you need a code from an app on your phone (Google Authenticator). Without it, you’re exposed to theft.
This is one rule you should never skip.
Step 3: Transfer Your Euros
Buying with a credit card is the fastest — but a little more expensive. A bank transfer is cheaper and works without problems with all Slovenian banks.
Start with an amount you can easily afford to lose. Seriously — 50 EUR is enough to start. The goal of your first investment isn’t to make a profit; it’s to learn how the system works.
Step 4: Buy and Store Safely
When you buy coins, they’re initially held on the exchange. For smaller amounts, that’s fine. For larger amounts, I recommend transferring them to your own wallet.
Term: Crypto Wallet — a program or physical device that stores your private keys. A private key (private key) is the only proof that the coins are yours. Without it — nothing.
A cold wallet (cold wallet, e.g. Ledger or Trezor) is a physical device with no internet connection. Your coins are not accessible to hackers. For amounts over 500 EUR, this is recommended.
The golden rule of the crypto world: “Not your keys — not your coins.”
How to Spot a Scam — Before the Loss, Not After
The crypto world is full of opportunities. Unfortunately, it’s also full of scammers. Here are the red flags that saved me from making a mistake:
🚩 They promise guaranteed returns. In the crypto world, nothing is guaranteed. Anyone who tells you otherwise is deceiving you.
🚩 Anonymous team + hype with no product. Before you invest in an altcoin, check: Who is behind the project? Does it have a real product? Is the code public (open source)?
🚩 “Send 1 BTC, I’ll send back 2 BTC.” This is a classic scam — it never actually happens. Not even when it’s posted under the name of a well-known person.
🚩 Phishing. Fake websites that look identical to the real exchange. Always check the URL in your browser. The real Binance is binance.com — not binance-login.net or anything similar.
🚩 Pump and dump schemes. A group makes a coordinated purchase of a lesser-known coin, the price shoots up, the media and influencers shout “this is the next Bitcoin” — then the big players sell everything and the price crashes. Everyone else is left with a loss.
The Tools I Personally Use Every Day
Here is my short list of free tools that I open every single day:
- CoinMarketCap — an overview of prices, market caps, and trends. Without it, you’re flying blind.
- CoinGecko — this is where I follow trends and data and analyze every purchase.
- GeckoTerminal — finding new altcoins before they become well known. High risk, high potential.
- Twitter/X — the crypto community. I follow key voices and read between the lines.
Term: Whales — large investors who move the market with huge purchases and sales. When a “whale” buys, the price goes up. When it sells, it drops. GeckoTerminal and similar tools help you watch what they’re doing.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a lot of money to earn with cryptocurrencies? No. You can start with 50 EUR. The goal at the beginning is to understand the system, not to make money. Once you understand it, you increase gradually.
Which cryptocurrency is best for getting started? For complete beginners: Bitcoin. It’s the most stable, the most recognized, and has the longest history. Once you learn the basics, you can start exploring altcoins.
What is the difference between an exchange and a wallet? An exchange (exchange) is a platform where you buy and sell cryptocurrencies. A wallet (wallet) is a place where you store them under your own control. Exchange = bank. Wallet = your fireproof safe at home.
How much time per week does managing a crypto portfolio take? With the HODL method and staking: 1 hour per month. With active trading: significantly more. I recommend starting with a passive approach.

Conclusion: The One Step That Separates the Successful from the Bystanders
Every week I get messages from Slovenes who started a year ago and write to tell me they’re glad they took action. And every week I get messages from those who waited and regret it.
The crypto market is open to everyone. It has no business hours. It doesn’t care whether you’re from Ljubljana or Murska Sobota, whether you have a degree or not, or whether you’re 20 or 90 years old.
The only requirement is that you start.
