What Magic Eden Is and How It Works

If you’re curious about how to earn extra income with cryptocurrencies, you’ve come to the right place. Besides trading, there are other options, including NFTs and digital assets, which more and more people around the world use every day.

In this article, we’ll get to know the Magic Eden platform, one of the largest and best-known marketplaces for NFTs and digital assets. I’ll show you how the platform works, explain the most important terms every beginner needs to know, and introduce ways you can earn rewards and create your first earning opportunities by using the platform.

Before we dive in, be sure to download my free e-book on earning with cryptocurrencies, where I explain step by step how I approach this niche and where I see the most opportunities for complete beginners.

What Is Magic Eden, Anyway?

Magic Eden is one of the world’s leading marketplaces for NFTs and digital collectible packs. It originally grew on the Solana network (more on what Solana is below), but today it also offers content connected to other cryptocurrency networks.

Before we go further, let me explain two terms that will be key to understanding the whole article:

  • Cryptocurrency is digital money that doesn’t exist in physical form (coins or banknotes) but is recorded on a computer network called a blockchain.
  • NFT (Non-Fungible Token, pronounced “en-eff-tee”) is a unique digital certificate of ownership. Think of it as a digital receipt proving that you own a particular digital image, character, video, or even a virtual card. Because every NFT is unique, it can’t be duplicated or simply swapped for another one (hence the name “non-fungible”).

Magic Eden is therefore a place where you can buy and sell these digital assets, open them in the form of “packs,” or even create them yourself. It sounds complicated, but once you understand the basic logic, using it is surprisingly simple.

When you open the platform’s home page, you’ll find four key tabs in the top menu:

  • Packs – purchasing digital packs that contain a random reward (more on this below),
  • Wonder Pick – a mode where you choose among several hidden NFTs and try to “guess” the most valuable one,
  • Lucky Buy – a mode where, for a small stake, you try to get an NFT at a price significantly lower than its actual value,
  • Trade – the classic marketplace where you buy and sell NFT collections directly at a fixed price or through offers.

In the top right corner of the page, you’ll find the Log In button, which you use to connect your digital wallet to the platform.

Basic Terms You Need to Understand Before You Start

So you don’t get lost later on, first take a look at a few fundamental concepts. I’ll explain each one in a simple way, as if I were explaining it to a friend over coffee.

  • Blockchain is a digital ledger in which all transactions are recorded. Because this ledger is distributed across thousands of computers around the world, it’s almost impossible for anyone to alter or forge it.
  • Solana is one of the fastest and cheapest cryptocurrency networks, known for nearly instant transactions and very low fees. That’s exactly why Magic Eden built its foundation on this network.
  • SOL is the native cryptocurrency of the Solana network. On Magic Eden, you’ll pay for practically everything – packs, NFTs, and offers – in this cryptocurrency.
  • Wallet is your personal digital “wallet” where you store your cryptocurrencies and NFTs. The most popular wallet for Magic Eden is Phantom, which you install as an extension in your web browser.
  • Seed phrase is a string of words (usually 12) that acts as the master key to your wallet. Whoever has this phrase has access to all of your money – so never, ever share it with anyone, and don’t enter it on suspicious websites.
  • Mint means creating, or the first recording of, a new NFT on the blockchain, which makes it an official, unique digital record.
  • Floor price is the lowest current price at which you can buy an NFT within a given collection. It’s an important indicator of the value of the entire collection.
  • Probability, or “odds,” is a key concept for packs and draws – it’s the mathematical chance of getting a particular reward from a pack. The higher the value of a possible reward, the lower the chance, as a rule, that you’ll actually get it.

Once you know these terms, everything else becomes much easier to understand.

How to Create a Wallet and Connect to Magic Eden

Before you can buy anything, you need a digital wallet. The process is simple:

  1. In your web browser (I recommend Chrome), install the free Phantom wallet from the provider’s official website.
  2. Create a new wallet and write your seed phrase down on paper – never store it only on your phone or in a file on your computer.
  3. Visit the Magic Eden website and click the Log In button in the top right corner.
  4. Select Phantom and confirm the connection.
  5. Transfer a small amount of SOL cryptocurrency to your wallet (you can buy it on a crypto exchange, for example through Kraken or OKX, which I’ve already written about in previous articles, and then send it to your Phantom address).

With that, your account is ready for your first purchase.

How to Actually Earn with Magic Eden – Practical Methods

Now let’s get to what interests you most. Magic Eden offers several different paths to earning, which differ quite a bit in risk and approach. Let’s go through them one by one.

Method 1: Buying and Opening Packs

The Packs tab lets you buy a digital pack with a random reward hidden inside – from low-value NFTs to rare and highly valuable pieces. The principle is similar to physical collectible cards, except here everything is digital and recorded on the blockchain.

What does this look like in practice?

  1. In the Packs tab, choose a category, such as Solana or Pokemon collections.
  2. For each pack, you can see its price (shown in SOL and in its dollar equivalent).
  3. Click on a pack and the Buy Pack button, then confirm the payment in your wallet.
  4. Open the pack directly on the platform, where you immediately see what you got.
  5. You can keep the reward in your collection or immediately list it for sale through the Trade tab.

My advice: Treat packs as a fun but risky form of purchase – similar to a raffle. The value of what you get can be lower or higher than the price of the pack, so never invest money that you would otherwise need for essentials.

Method 2: Wonder Pick

Wonder Pick is a feature where the platform shows you several hidden NFTs within the same offer, and you choose one of them without knowing in advance what is behind each choice. The goal is to pick an NFT worth more than what you paid for it.

How to get started:

  1. Open the Wonder Pick tab.
  2. Choose the offer that interests you and check the entry price.
  3. Click the Wonder Pick button and choose one of the hidden tiles.
  4. The system reveals which NFT you got, and it is immediately saved to your wallet or profile.

Important warning for beginners: As with packs, this is also a game of chance within the crypto world – the result is random, so never invest more than you can afford to lose.

Method 3: Lucky Buy

Lucky Buy is one of the most popular features on Magic Eden. It’s a system where, for a relatively small stake, you try to “hit” the chance to buy a particular NFT at a price that can be several times lower than its actual market value.

How it works in practice:

  1. In the Lucky Buy tab, choose an NFT that interests you and see its current market value (Value).
  2. Click the clover icon (the symbol for “luck”), which enters you into the draw for that NFT.
  3. Pay the entry fee, which is always significantly lower than the NFT’s actual value.
  4. The system randomly determines the outcome: if you “hit,” you get the NFT at the price you paid (which means a multiple, for example 5x or 20x lower than its actual value); if you don’t hit, you receive a smaller compensation or another form of refund, as defined in the platform’s rules.

On the Lucky Buy page, in the “Recent Lucky Buys” section, you can see other users’ past results, including the multiple (e.g., 11.4X or 23.5X) they achieved relative to their stake.

My advice: Lucky Buy is designed much like a raffle or lottery within the crypto world – it offers the chance of a big profit, but with a real risk of losing your stake. Take it as entertainment with a limited, predetermined amount, never as a reliable earning strategy.

Method 4: Buying and Selling NFTs via Trade (“Flipping”)

If you want a more deliberate, classic approach, the Trade tab is what you need. The same principle applies here as on other NFT marketplaces – you buy an NFT at a lower price and later sell it at a higher one.

What does this look like in practice?

  1. In the Trade tab, review the list of collections, sorted by data such as Floor (the lowest price), Market Cap (the market capitalization of the entire collection), Volume 7d (trading volume over the last seven days), and Owners (the number of owners).
  2. You look for collections where you notice rising volume and a growing number of owners while the Floor Price is still relatively low.
  3. When you decide to buy, you click on the chosen collection, then on an individual NFT, and confirm the purchase in your wallet.
  4. Once the collection’s price goes up, you list your NFT for sale again and set your own price.

My tip: Never buy a collection just because people are talking about it on social media. Always open the individual collection’s page and check its actual activity – Volume, Owners, and the percentage of pieces currently offered for sale (Listed) – and only then invest your money.

Method 5: Community participation and collecting rewards

Magic Eden often offers its active users additional perks, such as early access to new collections, participation in special campaigns, or extra rewards for regular activity on the platform. Exactly which programs are available at any given time can change, so always check the current offerings directly on the platform before planning your approach.

A practical guide: How to buy your first pack on Magic Eden

To show you how simple the whole process is, let’s look at a concrete example from start to finish:

  1. Go to the Magic Eden website and click Log In.
  2. Connect your Phantom wallet and transfer some SOL cryptocurrency to it beforehand.
  3. Click the Packs tab and choose the category you’re interested in (for example, Solana).
  4. Browse the available packs and their prices, shown in SOL and the equivalent in dollars.
  5. Click the Buy Pack button, then confirm the transaction in your wallet.
  6. Open the pack directly on the platform and see what you got.
  7. You can keep the NFT you received in your profile or list it for sale right away via the Trade tab.

You use this same basic principle (connecting your wallet, choosing, confirming in your wallet) for Wonder Pick, Lucky Buy, and buying NFTs via Trade as well.

How to recognize risky moves and protect your money

Unfortunately, the crypto world also attracts scammers and risky decisions, so it’s especially important for you as a beginner to know a few warning signs:

  • Unrealistic promises of profit. If someone is convincing you that you’ll “overnight” double your money with a certain pack or NFT, that’s almost always a sign of a scam or excessive risk.
  • Fake collections. Always check whether the collection has a verified badge on the platform (a blue checkmark), and always verify the project’s official link before buying anything.
  • Suspicious links in messages. Never click on links you receive through private messages on social media promising free NFTs – it’s almost always an attempt to steal your seed phrase.
  • Excessive playing of packs, Wonder Pick, or Lucky Buy. Since these features involve a random outcome, set a clear limit in advance for how much money you’re willing to put in, and stick to it consistently – regardless of whether you “hit it big” at the start or not.
  • Low collection activity. A collection with a very small number of owners and low trading volume (Volume) means that exiting later (selling) will be much harder for you, since there’s a shortage of buyers.

Magic Eden compared to other platforms

You’re probably wondering how Magic Eden differs from traditional crypto exchanges like Bitget, Kraken, or OKX, which I’ve already written about in previous articles, and from other NFT marketplaces like OpenSea. The difference is mainly in purpose:

  • Traditional crypto exchanges (Bitget, Kraken, OKX, MEXC …) are primarily intended for buying, selling, and trading established cryptocurrencies, such as Bitcoin or Ethereum, and they offer additional products for passive income, such as staking.
  • Traditional NFT marketplaces, such as OpenSea, are built mainly around the direct buying and selling of NFTs and token trading.
  • Magic Eden builds on this approach with additional, more gamified ways of entering the NFT world – packs, Wonder Pick, and Lucky Buy – while also keeping a traditional marketplace (Trade) for those who prefer to buy and sell directly.

For a complete beginner, it makes sense to first learn the basics on a traditional exchange (buying your first cryptocurrency, transferring it to a wallet), and then apply that knowledge on Magic Eden, where you can try both a more deliberate (Trade) and a more exciting (Packs, Wonder Pick, Lucky Buy) approach to earning with NFTs.

Frequently asked questions about Magic Eden

Do I need a lot of money to start using Magic Eden? No. You can buy many packs or entries into Lucky Buy for just a few tens of cents up to a few dollars in SOL cryptocurrency. I recommend starting with an amount you can afford to lose until you understand how the platform works.

Do I have to pay a fee when I buy or sell something? Yes, the platform typically charges a fee for individual transactions, and every transaction on the Solana network also includes a small network fee. The exact amount depends on the type of transaction and current network congestion, so always check it in your wallet before confirming.

What happens if I lose my seed phrase? If you lose your seed phrase and have no other way to access your wallet, you permanently lose access to your funds. That’s why it’s crucial to write down your phrase in a safe place, away from the internet, the moment you create your wallet.

Is it better to buy packs, use Lucky Buy, or buy NFTs directly through Trade? It depends on your risk tolerance. Packs, Wonder Pick, and Lucky Buy are based on random outcomes and are closer to gambling, whereas buying through Trade relies on your own judgment and research into an individual collection. As a beginner, I recommend first learning the basics through smaller, well-considered purchases, and only then trying the riskier features at your own discretion, and only with an amount you can afford to lose.

Golden Rules for a Safe and Successful Start on Magic Eden

To make your path to earning as safe and successful as possible, stick to these rules:

  1. Start with small amounts. Never invest money you urgently need for everyday life. Get to know the platform with a small stake, and only then gradually increase your activity.
  2. Protect your seed phrase. Write it down on paper and store it in a safe place, away from the internet. It’s the only real key to your money.
  3. Set a clear limit for Packs, Wonder Pick, and Lucky Buy. Since the outcome is random, decide in advance how much you’ll devote to these features and stick to it, no matter the outcome.
  4. Verify every transaction. Before you confirm any action in your wallet, read carefully what you’re authorizing – clicking “confirm” too quickly is the most common cause of lost funds.
  5. Diversify your investments. Don’t put your entire amount into a single collection, a single pack, or a single draw. Spread your money across several smaller opportunities.
  6. Keep learning. The crypto world changes quickly, so those who regularly follow the news achieve significantly better results than those who operate blindly.
