OpenSea

Are you wondering how to easily earn money with cryptocurrencies, even if you’ve never bought a single coin? The truth is simple: anyone who learns the basics today can secure an excellent additional income – without sitting in front of charts for hours and hours.

That’s why I’ve prepared this article for you about the OpenSea platform – one of the most recognizable marketplaces in the world, where the world of cryptocurrencies meets the world of digital collectibles. Together we’ll look at what OpenSea actually is, which terms you need to know, and above all – how you can earn your first income on this platform.

Before we dive in, be sure to check out my free webinar on earning with cryptocurrencies, where I explain step by step how I approach this niche and where I see the greatest opportunities for complete beginners.

What exactly is OpenSea?

OpenSea is one of the largest marketplaces in the world for trading digital assets. The platform itself describes its mission as “exchange everything” – in other words, a place where you can trade everything, from cryptocurrency tokens to so-called NFTs.

Before we go further, let me explain two terms that will be key to understanding the entire article:

  • Cryptocurrency (cryptocurrency) is digital money that doesn’t exist in physical form (coins or banknotes), but is recorded in a computer network called a blockchain.
  • NFT (Non-Fungible Token, pronounced “en-eff-tee”) is a unique digital certificate of ownership. Think of it as a digital receipt proving that you own a particular digital image, piece of music, video, or even a piece of virtual land. Because every NFT is unique, it can’t be duplicated or swapped for another one (hence the name “non-fungible” – not interchangeable).

OpenSea is therefore a place where you can buy, sell, or even create these digital assets yourself. It sounds complicated, but once you understand the basic logic, using it is surprisingly simple.

When you open the platform’s main page, a clear side menu on the left greets you with the following key options:

  • Discover – the home page with an overview of the currently most popular collections and what’s happening on the platform,
  • Collections – a list of all NFT collections that you can browse and filter,
  • Tokens – a tab for viewing and trading cryptocurrency tokens,
  • Swap – a tool for directly exchanging one token for another,
  • Drops – an overview of upcoming new collections and projects,
  • Activity – a real-time history of what’s happening on the platform (purchases, sales, offers),
  • Rewards – your personal rewards system for activity on the platform (more on this below),
  • Studio – a space where you can create and publish your own NFT,
  • Profile – your personal account with your NFTs and settings.

In the upper right corner of the page, you’ll find the Connect Wallet button, which you use to connect your digital wallet to the platform.

Basic terms you need to understand before you start

So that you don’t get lost later on, first take a look at a few fundamental concepts. I’ll explain each one in a simple way, as if I were explaining it to a friend over coffee.

  • Blockchain is a digital ledger in which all transactions are recorded. Because this ledger is distributed across thousands of computers around the world, it’s almost impossible for anyone to alter or forge it.
  • Wallet is your personal digital “wallet” where you store cryptocurrencies and NFTs. The most popular one is the MetaMask wallet, which you install as an extension in your web browser.
  • Seed phrase is a string of words (usually 12) that works as the master key to your wallet. Whoever has this phrase has access to all your money – so never, really never, share it with anyone, and don’t enter it on suspicious websites.
  • Gas fee (network fee) is a small amount you pay every time you carry out a transaction on the blockchain – similar to postage for a package. The size of this fee changes depending on how “busy” the network is at that moment.
  • Minting means creating a new NFT – that is, the moment when you “stamp” or record a digital file on the blockchain for the first time, making it an official, unique record.
  • ETH (Ethereum) coin is the cryptocurrency you’ll most often use for purchases on OpenSea, since most collections are built on the Ethereum network or on faster and cheaper networks connected to it (for example Base or Polygon).

Once you know these terms, everything else is much easier to understand.

How to create a wallet and connect to OpenSea

Before you can buy or sell anything, you need a digital wallet. The process is simple:

  1. In your web browser (I recommend Chrome), install the free MetaMask extension from the provider’s official website.
  2. You create a new wallet and write down your seed phrase on paper – never store it only on your phone or in a file on your computer.
  3. You visit the OpenSea website and click the Connect Wallet button in the top right corner.
  4. You select MetaMask and confirm the connection.
  5. Transfer a small amount of ETH cryptocurrency to your wallet (you can buy it on a crypto exchange, for example through Kraken or Bitget, and then send it to your MetaMask address).

With that, your account is ready for your first purchase or sale.

How to Actually Earn Money with OpenSea – Practical Methods

Now let’s move on to what interests you most. There are several proven ways to create additional income on this platform. Let’s go through them one by one.

Method 1: Buying and Selling NFTs (“Flipping”)

The most basic way to earn is to buy an NFT at a lower price and sell it later at a higher price. This is also called “flipping”.

What does this look like in practice?

  1. In the OpenSea search bar, look for a collection that interests you, or browse the Discover or Collections tab, which shows the most sought-after collections at the moment.
  2. For each collection, you can see important data on the right side of the screen, including the Floor (the lowest current entry price for the collection) and the percentage price change over a selected time period, such as the last 24 hours.
  3. You look for collections where you notice growing interest – that is, rising Volume and Owners while the Floor Price is still relatively low.
  4. Once you decide to buy, click the NFT you’ve chosen and the Buy Now button, then confirm the transaction in your wallet.
  5. When the collection’s price rises, you list your NFT for sale again using the Sell button and set your own price.

My advice: Never buy a collection just because people are talking about it on social media. Always open the individual collection’s page and check its actual activity – the number of items (Items), total trading volume (Total Volume), and the percentage of pieces currently listed for sale (Listed) – and only then put in your money.

Method 2: Creating and Selling Your Own NFTs

If you have any creative streak – you take photos, draw, make music, or create digital art – you can earn on OpenSea as a creator, not just as a buyer.

The process is as follows:

  1. Click the Studio tab.
  2. Upload your digital file (an image, video, music, or even a 3D model).
  3. Enter a title and description, and choose a network (for beginners, I recommend cheaper networks where the gas fee is lower).
  4. Set any royalties, if the selected network and smart contract support them. This means that, as the creator, you can receive a portion of the sale price on certain future resales of your NFT. The amount and payout of royalties depend on the rules of each platform and smart contract.
  5. Confirm the listing, and your NFT is published on the marketplace.

A practical example: If the selected platform and smart contract support royalties, you can receive a percentage of the sale price on future resales of your NFT. However, this isn’t guaranteed on every sale.

Method 3: Trading Cryptocurrency Tokens

OpenSea has recently evolved from just an NFT marketplace into a place where you can also trade other cryptocurrency tokens, not just NFTs. This means that within the same platform you can buy, sell, and swap various coins, much like on a traditional crypto exchange.

For a beginner, this is great news, since you no longer need multiple platforms – you can manage everything in one place, within the same wallet.

How to get started:

  1. In the side menu, click the Tokens tab, where you’ll see an overview of popular and currently trending tokens (for example, the “Trending Tokens” section).
  2. Check the price chart and basic information about the project.
  3. Open the Swap tab and make a direct exchange between your cryptocurrency and the token you’ve chosen.

Important warning for beginners: Trading smaller, lesser-known tokens is considerably riskier than buying established cryptocurrencies. Never invest money you can’t afford to lose, and always check the basic information about the project first.

Method 4: Rewards Program – Rewards for Activity on the Platform

OpenSea offers a Rewards program that encourages users to actively use the platform. By completing certain activities, such as trading, swapping tokens, or taking part in special tasks, you can earn XP (points). OpenSea determines which activities earn XP, and these may change over time.

The points you collect affect the progress of your Treasure Chest. At the end of each period (Wave or Season), you can open the chest and, depending on the progress you’ve made, receive different rewards. These may include digital items, NFTs, tokens, or other perks, but they are not guaranteed for all users.

It’s important to know that OpenSea can change the rules of the Rewards program, the way XP is earned, or the types of rewards at any time. So before you participate, always check the current terms on the official website.

My advice: If you want to take part in the Rewards program, use the platform thoughtfully and mainly for the features you actually need. The rewards program can be a nice bonus, but it shouldn’t be your main reason for trading NFTs or cryptocurrencies.

Method 5: Referral program

Like many other platforms, OpenSea lets you share your unique link with friends, social media followers, or acquaintances. When someone signs up through your link and starts using the platform, you may receive additional perks or rewards.

This is a great opportunity especially for those of you who already have a small community of followers interested in cryptocurrencies and want to turn that into an additional, completely passive source of income.

A practical guide: How to buy your first NFT on OpenSea

To show you how simple the whole process is, let’s go through a concrete example from start to finish:

  1. Open the OpenSea website and click Connect Wallet.
  2. Find the collection you’re interested in using the search bar at the top of the page.
  3. Click on an individual NFT within the collection to see its details: its traits (Properties), sales history, and current price.
  4. Click the Buy Now button if the NFT is for sale at a fixed price, or Place Bid if you want to place a bid in an auction.
  5. In your wallet (MetaMask), confirm the transaction and pay the appropriate network fee (gas fee).
  6. Congratulations – the NFT is now in your digital wallet and also visible in your profile on OpenSea.

You’ll use this same process when you’re ready to sell your first piece.

How to spot risky projects and avoid scams

Unfortunately, the crypto world also attracts scammers, so it’s especially important for beginners to know a few warning signs:

  • Unrealistic promises of profit. If someone tries to convince you that a certain NFT will double your money “overnight,” it’s almost always a sign of a scam.
  • Fake collections. Check whether the collection has a blue checkmark or verified badge on its profile, and always verify the official link on the project’s website before buying anything.
  • Suspicious links in messages. Never click on links you receive through private messages on social media promising free NFTs – it’s almost always an attempt to steal your seed phrase.
  • Low activity. A collection with a very small number of owners and low trading volume (Volume) means that exiting later (selling) will be much harder, because there aren’t enough buyers.

OpenSea compared to other platforms

You’re probably wondering how OpenSea differs from traditional crypto exchanges like Bitget, Kraken, or MEXC, which I’ve already written about in previous articles. The difference lies mainly in their purpose:

  • Traditional crypto exchanges (Bitget, Kraken, MEXC …) are primarily intended for buying, selling, and trading established cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin or Ethereum, and they offer additional passive income products such as Simple Earn or Staking.
  • OpenSea originally grew as a marketplace for NFTs, but today it is expanding into token trading as well, which means you can get a similar set of opportunities, though the focus is still on digital collectibles and unique assets.

For a complete beginner, it makes sense to first learn the basics on a traditional exchange (buying your first cryptocurrency, transferring it to a wallet), and then apply that knowledge on OpenSea, where you can expand your earnings to NFTs and tokens as well.

Frequently asked questions about OpenSea

Do I need a lot of money to start using OpenSea? No. Many smaller collections can be bought for just a few tens of euros in cryptocurrency. I recommend starting with an amount you can afford to lose until you understand how the platform works.

Do I have to pay a fee when I sell something? Yes, both the platform and the network itself (the gas fee) usually charge a small percentage or a fixed amount on each transaction. The amount depends on the network you choose and how congested the blockchain is at the time.

What happens if I lose my seed phrase? If you lose your seed phrase and have no other way to access your wallet (for example, through a password saved in your browser), you permanently lose access to your funds. That’s why it’s essential to write the phrase down and store it in a safe place as soon as you create your wallet.

Can I earn money with OpenSea even if I have nothing to sell? Yes. Through the Rewards program, you collect experience points simply by being active on the platform, and through the referral program, you can also earn by sharing your link with others, without ever creating or selling anything yourself.

Golden Rules for a Safe and Successful Start on OpenSea

To make your path to earning as safe and successful as possible, follow these rules:

  1. Start with small amounts. Never invest money you urgently need for everyday living. Get to know the platform with a small stake, and only then gradually increase your activity.
  2. Protect your seed phrase. Write it down on paper and store it in a safe place, away from the internet. It is the one true key to your money.
  3. Check every transaction. Before you confirm any action in your wallet, read carefully what you are authorizing – clicking “confirm” too quickly is the most common cause of lost funds.
  4. Diversify your investments. Don’t put your entire amount into a single collection or a single token. Spread your money across several smaller opportunities.
  5. Keep learning. The crypto world changes quickly, so those who regularly follow the latest developments achieve significantly better results than those who operate blindly.
