What Is Coin Market Cal, Anyway?
Imagine you had a calendar in your hands that told you: in three days, this cryptocurrency will announce big news; in a week, this project will upgrade its network; and in a month, one of the largest exchanges in the world will list this coin.
That’s exactly what Coin Market Cal is – an economic calendar for cryptocurrencies.
An economic calendar is a term from the world of finance that refers to a schedule of upcoming events that affect the value of investments. In the stock world, every investor knows it – it lists the dates of companies’ earnings reports, central bank decisions, and the like. Coin Market Cal is the same thing, only for the crypto world.
The website is available at coinmarketcal.com and collects and displays all announced events for thousands of cryptocurrencies. These events include:
- Network upgrades – when developers update a project’s technology (often positive for the price)
- Exchange listings – when a cryptocurrency arrives on a major exchange for the first time (this often causes a price jump)
- Partnerships and collaborations – when a project announces a collaboration with a big company
- Token Unlock – when locked coin supplies are released (this can push the price down)
- Conferences and summits – when a project’s leaders meet and announce news
- Halvings – special events for Bitcoin and some altcoins, where the miners’ reward is cut in half
Each of these events has the potential to move a cryptocurrency’s price up or down – and knowing about them in advance is a key advantage you have as a smart investor.

Why Is Coin Market Cal So Valuable for Making Money?
Before I answer, let me explain one key concept: the crypto market reacts to news and expectations, not just to the actual value of projects.
This means: when it’s announced that a cryptocurrency will be listed on Binance (the largest cryptocurrency exchange in the world), the price often starts rising BEFORE the listing actually happens. Investors buy early because they expect even more buyers to arrive once the listing goes live.
In crypto jargon, we call this “buy the rumor, sell the news”. It’s a strategy where you buy a cryptocurrency when people are only starting to talk about a positive event, and sell when that event actually happens and the price is already at its peak.
Coin Market Cal lets you keep track of all these announced events in one place. Instead of combing through Twitter, Telegram, Discord, and ten different websites, you open one page and see everything.
A real-world example: Let’s say I see on Coin Market Cal that in ten days, cryptocurrency XYZ will be listed on the Coinbase exchange for the first time. That’s a big event. You buy a small amount of that cryptocurrency. The price rises until the listing day, then you sell and lock in your profit.
Of course, this is a simplification – the market isn’t always predictable and there are risks. But knowing about such events in advance is undoubtedly an advantage that Coin Market Cal gives you.

How to Open and Set Up Coin Market Cal – Step by Step
Step 1: Go to coinmarketcal.com
Open your browser and type coinmarketcal.com into the address bar. The site is in English, but don’t worry – I’ll explain everything so you’ll understand.
Once the page loads, you’ll see:
- The top menu bar with the options: Ranking, Highlights, News, Add event
- The central part of the page with announced events, sorted by date
- Filters for searching by cryptocurrency, category, and date
Step 2: Understand the Main Page and Its Sections
As soon as you open Coin Market Cal, you’ll see four key sections on the home page – let’s look at what each one means:
🔴 Trending These are events that have gained the most views and community votes in the last 24 hours. It’s a kind of “pulse” of the crypto world – whatever is at the top here is what people are talking about the most right now.
🔥 Popular (Priljubljeno) Similar to Trending, but viewed over a longer period – the last 7 days. Here you’ll find events that have held the community’s interest over time.
👑 Influential (Vplivno) This section shows events with a high impact score – a numerical rating from 1 to 10 that tells you how likely a particular event is to affect a cryptocurrency’s price. The higher the score, the more “dangerous” or “promising” the event is for price movement.
⚡ Catalyst (Katalizator) Catalyst events are events with a high potential to trigger a rapid price move. The Catalyst score tells you how likely it is that the event will “trigger” a fast move.
Step 3: Learn how to read an individual event
When you click on any event or look at it in the list, you’ll see:
- Cryptocurrency name and its ticker – e.g., Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH)
- Event date – when it is supposed to happen
- Event description – what exactly is going to happen
- Number of votes – how many users have confirmed this event as credible
- Source – where the information comes from (an official project announcement, a tweet, a blog post…)
Watch out for reliability: Don’t blindly believe every event. Coin Market Cal is a platform where anyone can add an event – so check how many votes it has and whether it has a reliable source. Events with lots of votes and an official source are more trustworthy.

Coin Market Cal Ranking – what the cryptocurrency ranking tells you
When you click “Ranking” in the top menu, a table opens with all cryptocurrencies sorted by market capitalization.
Terms you’ll see:
Market Cap – the total value of all coins of a given cryptocurrency in circulation. It’s calculated like this: the price of one coin × the total number of coins in circulation. Bigger market cap = a larger and more stable cryptocurrency. Bitcoin, for example, has a market cap of more than $1,200 billion.
24h price change – by what percentage the price has changed over the last day. A red number means a drop, green means a gain.
Volume (24h) – trading volume. It tells you how many dollars’ worth of a given cryptocurrency was traded in the last 24 hours. Higher volume = greater interest = a more liquid cryptocurrency. Liquidity means you can buy or sell the coin quickly without major costs.
In the Coin Market Cal Ranking, besides this standard data, you can also see how many upcoming events each cryptocurrency has. This is key – a cryptocurrency with several major announcements in the near term may be worth paying attention to.
Coin Market Cal Highlights – how to make the most of the highlights
The Highlights section. Here, Coin Market Cal automatically gathers the events that the site’s algorithms consider worthy of special attention.
Here you’ll see:
- Trending – the 3 most relevant events of the day
- Popular – the 3 most popular events of the week
- Influential – the 3 events with the highest impact score
- Catalyst – the 3 events with the highest catalyst score
For a beginner, this is the ideal starting point. Every day when you open Coin Market Cal, look at Highlights first. In 30 seconds, you’ll know what’s most important in the crypto world today.
Coin Market Cal News – crypto news in one place
The News section shows the latest crypto news from trusted sources.
Why do macroeconomic factors matter for crypto?
Cryptocurrencies are not isolated from the global financial system. When stock values fall on exchanges around the world, crypto often falls too. When a central bank (such as the American Federal Reserve) raises interest rates, risky investments – which include cryptocurrencies – become less attractive to investors.
Knowing about these connections helps you understand why the price of Bitcoin sometimes drops even though there’s no bad news in the crypto world.

How to filter events by the cryptocurrency you’re interested in
This is one of the most practical features of Coin Market Cal. Imagine you have Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana in your portfolio – and you only want to know which events are coming up for those three cryptocurrencies.
Here’s how to do it:
- On the Coin Market Cal home page, find the search bar or the “Coins” filter
- Click on it and type in the name of the cryptocurrency (e.g., “Bitcoin” or “BTC”)
- The page will automatically filter and show only the events for that cryptocurrency
- Repeat the same for each cryptocurrency separately
You can also filter by category:
- Exchange – exchange listings
- Partnership – partnerships
- Release – announcements of new versions or products
- Airdrop – free distribution of new coins
Earning Strategies with Coin Market Cal – Concrete Examples
Now for what you really want to know: how you can actually make money with this tool.
Strategy 1: Exchange Listings
When a cryptocurrency lands on a major exchange for the first time – such as Binance, Coinbase, or Kraken – it often causes a big price jump. Why? Because millions of new investors who previously didn’t have easy access to it can suddenly buy it.
On Coin Market Cal, filter by the “Exchange” category and see which coins will soon be listed on exchanges. Then do your own analysis of the project (look at what it does, whether it has an active community, whether it’s legitimate) – and if everything checks out, get in early.
Real-world example: Berachain (BERA) was among the Trending events on Coin Market Cal when it had a major mainnet event. Mainnet means the project moves from the test phase to a real, live network. This is often a positive signal for the price.
Strategy 2: Network Upgrade
When a project announces a major technical upgrade, it often means the project is active, evolving, and attracting investors. On Coin Market Cal, you’ll see this under the “Release” or “Network Upgrade” category.
For example: NEAR Protocol had Network Upgrade 2.13 announced, which was among the popular events. When a project upgrades its network, it often means better speed, lower transaction costs, or new features – all of which is positive for the project and potentially for the price.
Strategy 3: Token Unlock – Watch Out for These Dates
A Token Unlock is one of those events that often causes a price drop – and it’s important to know about it so you don’t end up on the wrong side of the trade.
What is a Token Unlock? When a project issues coins, it often locks up a portion of them – meaning they can’t be sold for a certain period of time. When this lock-up period expires, the coins are released and their owners (often early investors or the project team) can sell them. This selling pushes the price down.
On Coin Market Cal, you can see announced Token Unlocks. That tells you: watch this date for this cryptocurrency – right before and after it, there’s an increased chance of a price drop.
Strategy 4: Halving
Halving is one of the most important events in the crypto world – especially for Bitcoin. A halving is a programmed event that happens every four years and cuts in half the reward Bitcoin miners receive for creating new blocks.
Simply put: after a halving, fewer new Bitcoins are created. When supply is lower but demand stays the same or grows, the price often rises. Historically, every halving so far has been followed by several months of Bitcoin price growth – although past performance doesn’t guarantee future results.
On Coin Market Cal you can see when the next halving is scheduled – and that’s information smart investors factor into their long-term decisions.
Coin Market Cal Mobile App
Good news for those of you who are always on the go: Coin Market Cal has a mobile app for Android and iOS.
With the app, you get:
- Push notifications – set up alerts for specific cryptocurrencies or event categories, and you’ll get a notification on your phone when a new event is posted
- Portfolio tracking – enter which cryptocurrencies you hold, and the app will show only the events relevant to your portfolio
- Latest news – the same news feed as on the web, but in your pocket
Setting up alerts is extremely useful. Say you hold Ethereum. Set up an alert, and when any planned event for Ethereum is posted, you’ll be notified right away – before it becomes “old news.”

How to Tell Reliable Events from Fake Ones
This is a question you should always ask yourself. Coin Market Cal is open to everyone – which means anyone can add an event, and it may not be credible.
Here are the signs that an event is reliable:
✅ High number of votes – the community has confirmed that it’s a real event. If an event has fewer than 5 votes, be skeptical.
✅ Official source – a verifiable link to the project’s official website, an official tweet, or an announcement from the developers.
✅ The date and time are specific – not just “June 2029,” but an exact date. The more specific the event, the more likely it is to have a concrete source.
✅ It describes exactly what will happen – not just “big update,” but something like “NEAR Protocol Network Upgrade 2.13: consensus improvements and lower gas fees.”
❌ No source or an unknown source – steer clear.
❌ Only one vote or no votes – it was probably added by just one person who may have an agenda.
❌ Exaggerated language – “MEGA PARTNER ANNOUNCEMENT THAT WILL 100X THE PRICE” – that’s manipulation.
Coin Market Cal and Your Overall Crypto Strategy
Coin Market Cal is a tool, not a magic wand. It won’t tell you exactly when to buy and sell. But combined with other tools and knowledge, it becomes a powerful part of your strategy.
My recommended routine for beginners:
1. In the morning (5 minutes): Open Coin Market Cal and check the Highlights section. What are the most important events of the day? Which cryptocurrencies are trending?
2. Weekly review (15 minutes): Filter by the cryptocurrencies you hold or are following. See whether any major events are coming up in the next 14 days – listings, upgrades, halvings.
3. Before every purchase: Before you buy any cryptocurrency, check its profile on Coin Market Cal. Are any positive events coming up? Or is there perhaps a Token Unlock scheduled that could push the price down?
4. Follow the News section: Macroeconomic factors affect crypto. If big things are happening in the global financial world, that’s relevant to your crypto decisions.
I explain all of these strategies and more in detail in my free e-book, which is ideal for anyone just starting out.
